Tour 3) Loch Ness, Inverness & Culloden Battlefield
On leaving the port of Invergordon this tour will take you south along the western shore of the Cromarty Firth, and through the historic market town of Dingwall, the centre in the northern Scottish Highlands for all things agricultural, over many years.
Your tour will then continue through the pretty villages of Maryburgh, Conon Bridge and Muir of Ord, before arriving in the beautiful village of Beauly.
You will have some time here on your own to browse in the classic little shops located along the picturesque main street, and to wander around the ancient ruined Beauly Priory.
On reboarding the tour vehicle, the tour will turn off the main road, and on to a scenic minor route through some beautiful heather moorland, and on to the picturesque village of Drumnadrochit by legendary Loch Ness.
The tour will then travel north along the western shore of the world famous loch before pausing for a photo stop, and on to spend time in the small Scottish Highland capital city of Inverness.
Once in the city centre you will have ample time on your own to explore all that’s on offer there.
The compact city centre has a considerable variety of retail outlets, you may be interested in visiting the traditional Victorian Market.
Should you wish to find somewhere for lunch, there is plenty of choice for all tastes.
For those with an interest in the best Scotch Whiskies, a visit to Inverness would not be complete without paying a visit to The Whisky Shop, one of the finest retailers of Scotland’s iconic drink in the Scottish Highlands.
In the shop you will see for sale hundreds of different bottlings, many of which are exclusive to themselves.
The experienced assistants will only be too happy to assist you with their wealth of knowledge.
On reboarding the tour coach, the tour will travel 6 miles to the east of Inverness, where on high ground overlooking the city and the hills and mountains of the northern Scottish Highland mainland, guests will sense the bleak desolation felt by the Jacobite army of Charles Edward Stuart on the 16th of April 1746 as the superior British government forces commanded by Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland approached…the horror that ensued was to go down in history as the Battle of Culloden, the final confrontation of the campaign historically known as the Jacobite rising, the purpose of which was for the Gaels to regain the British throne. The futile confrontation fought on Culloden Moor was the last pitched battle fought on British soil.
The tour will visit the Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, where the horror of what occurred on that afternoon so long ago is brought home with incredible realism.
Afterwards your tour will return north to your ship at Invergordon.
